Detroit Diesel Series 60: Top 5 Issues & Quick Fixes

The Series 60 is a workhorse. Here are the five problems we see most often—and the quick checks to confirm them before you buy or install.

1) Injector Harness & Connectors

Intermittent misfires at warm idle are often harness/connector related. Inspect pins for fretting, check resistance, and verify trims in the ECM.

2) Charge-Air Leaks

Loss of power or high EGTs? Pressure test the CAC and boots. Even small leaks tank efficiency.

3) Exhaust Manifold Leaks

Soot trails near joints or warped flanges are common with age. Replace gaskets/studs; torque in sequence after heat cycles.

4) EGR System (Later DDEC)

Sticky valves and faulty delta-P sensors cause rough running and regen issues. Confirm sensor plausibility and commanded vs. actual EGR flow.

5) Oil Leaks at Front Structure

Front cover and crank seals age out. Verify with dye and a clean engine before install to avoid chasing false positives.
